Admissions Essay for Masters in Nursing

Why, at this juncture in your life, have you decided to pursue a career in nursing rather than any other health science field? What role does Columbia Nursing play specifically into your future plans? Assess your skills and how they will aid in your transition into becoming a Columbia Nursing student. I will paste my draft on the bottom, I would like for it to be revised to sound a little more professional with better vocabulary. i. During my years at Manhattan College, I had numerous volunteer/ shadow experiences in which had helped me decide that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. Although I was sure that my future included working in healthcare, I was still unsure as to how I would fit. Throughout my whole life, I have held many jobs. I have been a waitress, cashier, facilities/events worker for a collegiate athletics department, camp counselor, physical therapy aide, and now a Care Coordinator at a well-known and amazing organization also known as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. ii. The moment I realized I wanted to be a nurse was while I was working at SportsCare Physical Therapy Aide. One of the patient’s I was assisting had told me that the reason she still comes back bi-weekly, is because of people like me. I then proceeded to ask her why? She expressed that “your warm smile that welcomes me through the door as well as your genuine desire to help me though my tough exercises gives me hope that I will get better, and that’s enough for me to keep pushing myself.” I had never had someone tell me something like this before. I immediately knew what my calling was after she had made this statement. iii. With each of these jobs, I have had each one of my supervisors/managers commend me for my hard work ethic as well as my infectious smile that has always helped people feel welcomed. At my current role at MSK, during my 6 month evaluation, my manager had highlighted my “inability to look unhappy, and my infectious smile”. He had emphasized that my personality is a prime example of how just a simple gesture can make a patient’s experience become a positive one. He had asked me what makes me motivated to always be a source of light at work. I had responded to him that there is nothing that motivates me. I try my best to create a safe and warm space for those who feel the most unease. It simply is something that I love to do.  iv. How does nursing fit then? The way I am describing myself, any job requires someone to be able to be hard-working, communicative and have empathy. Nursing requires all of these qualities, but multiply that by 1000. While working at Memorial Sloan, I help to coordinate a patient’s care, by assisting with scheduling their surgeries and treatments. Every time I help to schedule a person’s surgery, I try my best to help the patient by trying to coordinate their appointments together, to make it more convenient for them. Although I may not be administering clinical care, I still believe that I am making a huge difference in their lives, depending on how I decided to care for them. One patient of mine had to have a re-excision of her right breast. In a short amount of time. That same week, their happen to be a hurricane which had wiped out electricity at one of our regional sites, which happen to be a lot closer to home rather that traveling to the city. Although it seemed like there was no hope, the day before she needed to receive a CT that was urgent to have prior to surgery, I told her to give me this last day, and I will do my best. After dozens of emails, many pages, and an infinite amount of calls to people in every department, I was able to get this patient her scan’s and pre-surgical testing closer to home. She was so grateful for something I never thought could really make an impact.  ** I would like an ending that ties all of this together if possible***
