American Judicial System

Overview: This exam has been developed in order to test your ability to apply knowledge gained from this course, the American Judicial System and to criminal justice policies and procedures in general. You will need to locate information, think critically and apply knowledge to “real world” situations. Note: Even though no Module 5 assignment was required specifically, the readings as delineated in the syllabus for that module should have been completed. Label all items/subsections clearly and answer them in order. Item #1: Find and summarize Rosa’s Law and describe, in detail, how this applies to the criminal justice system. You may want to cover the relevance of terminology with reference to systematic biases. For example, how would you compare this to the 1964 Civil Rights Act or current efforts to “defund” law enforcement? Item #3: Mapp v Ohio (1961), Miranda v Arizona (1966) and Roper v. Simmons (2005) were all Supreme Court Cases that shaped the American Criminal Justice System. Briefly describe each case and explain the impact on the ACJS. Item #4: The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution has become one of the most debated in light of current events such as mass shootings and domestic terrorism. Gun control, in general, is at the center of most arguments. Explain how the second amendment could be rewritten in order to resolve these differences. Be specific and provide examples.
