1. Discuss several different ways in which “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” represent America and address versions of the American dream. 2. Discuss how elements of Irony, Parody, Gothic and Symbolism are incorporated in “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Do not forget to write about Gothic, including supernatural, mystery, horror, and symbolism, on the one hand, and ironical usage of those in the stories we discussed, on the other. In the introduction write about irony and parody (give definitions and say why Irving uses it in his stories). One paragraph should be dedicated to the use of fictional narrator/writer with the explanation of the purpose of it. In conclusion, wrap everything up.
