Many Chinas

One of the themes of this class is the idea of “many Chinas,” that is, the argument that despite the often-monolithic view of China, it is in fact extraordinarily diverse ethnically, geographically, culturally, socioeconomically, and politically. There are significant income and development inequalities between rural and urban areas and between different regions. There are also important differences in the ways in which different groups of people are governed. Write a persuasive essay arguing for the “many Chinas” view, drawing on both class readings and lecture material. You may choose to focus on one particular type of diversity/difference, or on several different axes of difference. Address both the sources or origins of the type(s) of diversity that you discuss, as well as their implications in contemporary China
